Chat-Com Upgrades Two-Way Radio Network at Blackpool Airport

Chat-Com has successfully delivered a major upgrade to the two-way radio network at Blackpool Airport, further strengthening communications across the site.

Blackpool has been a valued customer for over seven years and they recently approached us to improve coverage, resilience, and overall system performance for critical users.

A key element of the project was the installation of a new high-gain UHF antenna at the Air Traffic Control Tower, significantly expanding radio coverage across the entire airport site. This enhancement ensures reliable communication in previously challenging areas, supporting seamless coordination between teams.

The upgraded network is now used by both air traffic control and the on-site fire station—two departments where clear, dependable communication is essential for safety and operational efficiency. To align with the new infrastructure, all on-site radios were reprogrammed, including vehicle-installed mobile units and handheld devices, ensuring a smooth transition with minimal disruption.

In addition, Chat-Com installed a new Motorola repeater, forming the backbone of the enhanced system. All voice recording systems were also reconfigured to operate on the new channel, maintaining compliance and ensuring accurate communication logging.

As part of the upgrade, Chat-Com worked closely with Ofcom to procure new frequencies, enabling improved performance and reduced interference in a busy RF environment.

This project highlights Chat-Com’s continued commitment to delivering robust, future-ready communication solutions. By combining technical expertise with a deep understanding of the site, the company has provided Blackpool Airport with a modernised radio network built to support both current operations and future growth.
